Automobile searches

Searches of automobiles, similar to the preceeding chapters, require a finding of "reasonable suspicion." Specifically, a police officer may search a car for weapons if he has reasonable suspicion that the driver is armed. Under this exception, however, an officer may only search parts of the automobile where the suspect may have access to a weapon (e.g., the officer may not search for a weapon in the trunk). Even if the driver or passengers of the car are not physically inside the automobile, officers still may search . . .
