Exceptions to Warrants Containers People often carry containers of various sorts which police officers believe will contain evidence, illegal substances, etc. Individuals may carry as much privacy interest in these containers, however, as they do in their homes or automobiles, which prevents some container searches absent a warrant. In United States v. Chadwick, 433 U.S. 1 (1977), officers lawfully obtained a locked footlocker belonging to the respondent.
